VAT 69 was created in 1882 by William Sanderson and Son in Leith, Scotland — the name derived from the story that Sanderson selected his preferred blend from one hundred experimental casks, numbering the chosen one 69. The brand built a reputation as a consistent, accessible blended Scotch through the late Victorian and Edwardian eras and maintained wide American distribution through the mid-twentieth century. American-market VAT 69 bottles of the 1940s–1950s carried both the Federal Law embossing required of all US spirits containers and the distinctive VAT 69 branding that made the bottle immediately legible on any shelf or bar cart.
