Garrett and Company was founded in 1835 and built into one of the largest wine operations in the United States before Prohibition dismantled the American wine industry. Their flagship wine, Virginia Dare — named for the first English child born in the New World in 1587 — was among the most widely consumed wines in America at the turn of the twentieth century. After Repeal, Garrett rebuilt and continued producing Virginia Dare through the 1930s and 1940s, and this bottle dates to that post-Prohibition period: the Refilling Prohibited embossing was a regulatory requirement introduced after Repeal to prevent bootleggers from refilling commercial bottles with untaxed liquor.
