James Buchanan & Co. was established in London in 1884 by Canadian-born entrepreneur James Buchanan, who built his Glasgow-sourced blend into one of the most recognized Scotch whisky brands in the world within a decade. Black & White — named for the iconic black and white Scottish terriers on the label — became the best-selling Scotch in Britain by the early twentieth century and a major American import through Prohibition and beyond. The Deluxe expression was a premium tier produced specifically for the postwar American market, where the brand’s prestige positioning and Royal Warrant heritage commanded significant shelf space in licensed liquor stores.
